Filing before you separate, in outline
VA runs pre-discharge programs so that a service member can start a disability claim before their separation date rather than waiting until afterwards. The intent is a decision at or shortly after discharge instead of months into civilian life.
Which program applies depends on how many days remain before you separate, and whether you can complete any required examinations before you leave. The windows are specific and they are the part people most often get wrong.
Check the current windows on VA.gov or with your transition office before you rely on a timeline. Eligibility day counts are set by VA and they change. We are not the authoritative source for them and we will not pretend to be.
What the programs need from you
- Enough time remaining before your separation date to complete the process.
- Availability for any examinations VA schedules while you are still in.
- A copy of your service treatment records available to VA.
- Contentions that are actually supported by evidence in the file.
The last one is the only one we can help with directly, and it is the one that most often decides the outcome.

Five things to confirm while you still can
Each of these is far easier to fix now than at any later point, and two of them cannot be fixed later at all.
Is every condition actually documented?
Not remembered. Documented, in a record, with a date. This is the last window where you can add to your service treatment records from the inside.
Do you have your own complete copy?
Service treatment records and personnel file, in your hands, before you walk out. Requesting them afterwards is slower and sometimes they cannot be produced at all.
Is there a diagnostic study where one is required?
Several conditions cannot be granted without a specific objective study. If yours needs one and you do not have it, this is the cheapest moment in your life to get it.
Have you collected your witnesses?
Contact details for the people who can describe what they saw. After separation, tracking them down becomes its own project.
Do you know which contentions are actually ready?
Filing a condition with a missing required element does not get partial credit. It gets a denial that sits on your record permanently.
